PT Anderson's The Master

Despite all the effort of Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology to stop the PT Anderson film entitled, The Master  they have failed. Although the movie has just come out it had the best opening weekend of all time and it was featured at both the Toronto and Venice film festivals. Where it won awards for acting and directing after its premiere and is currently being seen as an early contender for the Oscars.

PT Anderson admitted at the Venice film festival that it was inspired by L Ron Hubbard and the early days of Dianetics. However he would later state, "This is a fabricated story: pure fiction." And Philip Seymour Hoffman (who's character resembles Scientology's founder L. Ron Hubbard) is quoted saying that 'It's not a Scientology movie."

Hubbard and Psychiatry

Hubbard and Psychiatry

In Scientology, one of the first front groups you learn about is the Citizens Commision on Human Rights (or CCHR) and how psychiatry (according to the cult) is a “destructive and fraudulent practice” and they even go further to claim that “there is no such thing as mental illness”. However, in 1947 L. Ron Hubbard wrote to the  Veteran’s Administration begging for psychiatric care in this letter:

An interesting fact is that when Hubbard first wrote Dianetics he intended it to be used as a textbook for psychology and psychiatry however it was dismissed by the American Psychological Society who not only encouraged their members not to use Hubbard’s pseudo scientific methods but also stated that “the fact that these claims are not supported by empirical evidence of the sort required for establishment of scientific generalizations”.So first psychiatrist and psychologist were okay but then because they didn't support Hubbard’s babble they become enemy number one? Wow. But the conflict doesn't end there Hubbard had an addiction to psychiatric drugs which he kept until his death in 1986. In the coroner's report (Which you can see HERE) it was noted that he had Vistaril in his body. So, contradiction cocktail anyone?
